Get to Know Me

My name is Ayomide Precious Ajagbonna, and I am a senior at Indiana University Indianapolis in the School of Health and Human Sciences, pursuing a bachelor's degree in Health Science.

I’ve always known that I wanted to work in a field that combines sports and medicine, but it took time, research, and hands-on experiences to discover the right path. After participating in various sports-related events and exploring different healthcare careers, I found my passion in becoming a Physician Assistant. This role allows me to blend my interests in medicine, wellness, and patient care while working closely with both individuals and healthcare teams. I’m excited to continue preparing for a career where I can make a real difference in people’s health and lives.

My Journey

I was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and later moved to Ibadan after both of my parents received promotions. I spent the first eight years of my life in Nigeria before moving to the United States in 2011. Adjusting to life in a new country was a major culture shock. I had to adapt quickly to a new way of life while also learning a completely different history and culture. Although the transition was difficult at times, I’m grateful I had the opportunity to move with my family and that I received the support and encouragement I needed during that period of change.

One of the biggest challenges I faced early on was starting school in the U.S. without knowing anyone. I felt homesick and isolated at first, but after about six months, I began making friends and gradually felt more comfortable. A moment that really stood out to me was a middle school field trip to the IU Indianapolis campus. We learned about the university’s history, explored the city, and even enjoyed a fun meal together. That visit opened my eyes to the opportunities available in Indianapolis and planted the idea of attending IU Indy one day. Years later, that dream came full circle when I was accepted into the school.

The Army has been a significant part of my journey. I enlisted during my senior year of high school and attended Basic Training the following year. One of the most valuable things I’ve gained from my time in the military is the deep connections and bonds I've formed with others. Basic Training pushed me to overcome both physical and mental challenges, and it truly changed me.

Before joining, I was very shy, but through the experience and especially in my role as a platoon squad leader I learned how to step up, lead, and communicate with others under pressure. That leadership role taught me how to motivate a team in high-stress situations, including simulated combat.

As a future Physician Assistant, strong communication skills are essential. The Army has prepared me to engage with people from all backgrounds and cultures, helping me become more adaptable, confident, and compassionate.

I never imagined I would become a soldier or someone who takes risks to serve others. I used to think the military was only for people who were already brave and strong but now I know that those qualities are built through service and perseverance. Today, I can confidently say that I am brave, I am strong, and I’m ready to face any challenge ahead.

The Ajagbonna's

My family has always been my greatest support system. No matter how busy their lives were, they always made time for me. We’ve faced many challenges together, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world.

My mom has been my biggest encourager. She constantly reminds me to follow my dreams and never settle. Even while working overtime, juggling multiple shifts, and going back to school to earn her license, she always made time to support and uplift us.

My dad taught me the value of strength and hard work. When we first moved to the United States, he traveled back and forth from Nigeria, working multiple jobs, yet always made sure to be there for our birthdays and milestones. His dedication continues to inspire me.

My younger brothers have also been a steady source of encouragement. Though I’m the oldest, we push each other to grow. We all share a passion for STEM, but each of us brings something different: one is studying artificial intelligence, the other information technology. Their curiosity and drive constantly inspire me and remind me how powerful STEM can be across fields and industries.
